Q My mother always gives me a hard time about my career choice, even though I love my job and am completely fulfilled by it. How can I get over my irritation with her about this and help her accept me for who I am? A Los Angeles-based life coach Beth Rothenberg responds: You might say something like: I am coming to you because I love and respect you, and I know you love me and dont want me to mess up my life. But I need to feel that you respect my judgment and have faith that I am making the right choice for me at this time. Right now I am where I want to be. I need to feel that even though you may not agree, you respect my need to make my own choices.
Take these three steps to happiness:

Q: have a great job, great friends and a terrific husband and home, but I still feel a void in my life, like I need a change. What can I do to figure out what is missing? Los Angeles-based life coach Beth Rothenberg offers these suggestions: That something is different for all of us at different times in our lives. Some find it through meditation or yoga, some in journal writing, nature or religion. For others it means finding a purpose, doing something that benefits others. Finding your passion — something you love so much, you cant wait to get up in the morning — will help make you feel complete.

Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Members will be asked to contribute ideas for a research agenda. The Cancer-Exercise Agenda: Opportunities in Applications Research
Symposium: Theoretical Basis and Effectiveness
Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

MILPITAS, Calif. — Nanometrics Incorporated (Nasdaq:NANO), a leading supplier of advanced metrology equipment to the semiconductor industry, today announced that the company has completed the sale of certain real estate holdings in Narita, Japan and Milpitas, California. We are pleased to announce the successful sale of our facility in Japan - which had sat unutilized for nearly two years - as well as the condominium in Milpitas, commented Tim Stultz, president and chief executive officer of Nanometrics. This announcement is another benchmark to demonstrate our companys ability to monetize fixed assets and dispose of businesses no longer critical to our mission, such as the machining and plating shop closure announced earlier this month. These steps improve our profitability and cash flow, similar to the successful second-quarter divestitures of the Yosemite CD-SEM technology and DiVA product line.
Orbit Drop Dallas is also in the midst of its third estate liquidation. They are continuing with the liquidation of a record label. Orbit Drop has invented a formula for successful large volume sales which benefits the consumer and the company. We are receiving such an enormous response to our liquidation service, it is important for us to grow with our consumers requests and pass this training onto our franchisees. Our goal is to be the number one eBay drop-off store franchise and we are well on our way. Estate sales add a tremendous addition to our revenue; they generate profitable items and save time in processing. Orbit Drop is very actively involved in many Holiday Charities, Toys for Tots, Love for Kids, Kidds Kids, as well as many other K runs and charitable functions. THERES something for everyone at San Francisco International Airport. The sprawling complex is like a city within a city. Small wonder, then, that even mans best friend has a place at SFO. That vital venue would be located in a courtyard nestled between the new international terminal and the United Airlines domestic terminal. Call it a traveling poochs personal paradise. Its a well- tended spot where a canine (or, perhaps, a well-trained cat) can do its business without offending folks or requiring a quick and embarrassing indoor cleanup.

J. Edward Murphy Jr. PennWell Publishing Co., 1421 S. Sheridan Road/P.O. Box 1260, Tulsa, OK 74101. 1996. Indexed. 300 pages. $69.95 Mobile Dentistry is written for health care professionals contemplating developing a mobile or nontraditional dental practice. The author explains each aspect of the development and implementation of a nontraditional dental practice, starting with the physical components essential to delivery, such as selecting equipment. He covers staffing and business needs, and ends with techniques for overcoming barriers that may be met throughout the process. Addressed are the needs particular to treating patients in long-term-care, skilled nursing facilities (integrating dental treatment planning with multidisciplinary assessment), and mobile dental practices (marketing, infection control, and management of laboratory procedures), as well as a chapter on mobile missionary programs. The book specifically addresses the requirements of a dental practitioner, however, the needs of the dental hygiene practitioner can be easily extrapolated. Additionally, because the author includes learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter, it may be utilized as a text for students. Mobile Dentistry is very timely, addressing a portion of the population with significant oral health care needs. Many are unable to travel to the traditional dental office or reside in long-term health care facilities. Others live in areas where traditional dental care is not attainable. Access to care is a concern for both target populations. The reader is provided with step-by-step suggestions to ensure a successful transition from the traditional dental setting to the nontraditional setting where underserved populations can be treated.
A dental practice has been able to create thousands of new NHS places through a pounds 350,000 revamp. Hebburn Dental Clinic has opened in Park Road, Hebburn, in premises formerly occupied by Christopher Haighs dental surgery. It opened a fortnight ago, creating 5,000 new NHS vacancies. Around 2,500 remain, with 500 snapped up in two days last week.

Just as some animals will offer in courtship a morsel of food, the bowerbird and others make gifts of feathers and flowers and all manner of colorful trifles. There can be tittle doubt that the first tokens of human affection were of a simitar nature and were worn as treasured souvenirs. With the recognition of the intrinsic qualities of shelfs and stones, the evolution of jewely had begun. In the Middle Ages patronage was largely in the hands of the church, and a good proportion of medieval jewelry is of a devotional nature. Not until the second half of the fifteenth century was there an emphasis on the aphrodisian themes of antiquity. The refinement of Italian Renaissance jewelry was a result of the broadly based apprenticeship of artists, which required a mastery of drawing, engraving, chasing, casting, enameling, and niello work. Thus Donatello and Ghiberti became sculptors, Ghirlandaio and Andrea del Sarto became painters, and Pollaiuolo and Verrocchio worked in several mediums, returning to goldsmith work and jewelry at will. The fashion for decorative emblems and badges was taken up with enthusiasm in the courts of Europe during the Renaissance. Both devotional and amorous allusions are common in these decorative devices, which closely echo contemporary jewel work. One of the most charming designs for an emblem shows Cupid rashly pursuing the sweetness of the honeycomb only to be stung by the bees who have made it (Pl. XIII), a poignant allegory of the pleasure and pain of love. The Netherlandish hat badge in Plate IX is an emblem depicting a woman choosing between two suitors surrounded by a motto that can be translated “love is something but money is everything.”
The October Co. The October Co. offers the new Triple-Tier Jewelry System and the DeLuxe 32 Compartment Jewelry Tray (shown). The DeLuxe 32 Compartment Jewelry Tray offers more compartments for expanded storage of rings, earrings and more. Thirty storage compartments of various sizes and two foam ring pads accommodate jewelry of various sizes. The Triple-Tier System can be configured into one, two or three acrylic tiers with a suspended or sliding upper tray. Both products are available in black, blue, maroon and teal green velvet in standard and custom sizes.

NETWORKINGHISTORICAL ACHIEVEMENTS IN COMMUNICATION AND TRANSPORTATIONNetworks were developed as a communication method between computers at remote sites. They trace their roots back to nineteenth-century communication and transportation historical achievements. In America, people have always strived for faster travel and communication systems, particularly between the East and West Coasts. These systems included technology and experiments of varying complexity. For example, the Pony Express operated between 1860 and 1861. It provided seven-day mail service between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. In 1861 the Western Union Telegraph Company replaced the Pony Express and provided a faster, more reliable communication service. Furthermore, the transcontinental railroad was completed at Promontory, Utah, in 1869. These events improved the telegraph industry. The telephone was invented in 1876, and the first transcontinental telephone line was joined at Wendover, Utah, in 1915. This national telephone network provided a foundation for the wide area computer networks that evolved later in the twentieth century.

KITCHENS: PLAN, REMODEL, BUILD, Creative Homeowner, $19.95, softcover, 255 pages, nearly 400 photos. If done right, a newly remodeled kitchen can add value to your home and create a functional, exciting living space. However, knowing what to remodel and where to start can frustrate even the most accomplished do-it-yourself homeowner. “Kitchens: Plan, Remodel, Build,” by Creative Homeowner, is the perfect tool for homeowners looking to remodel or update their kitchen; covering everything from design, color and layout to demolition and installation.
Call it catalytic conversion: remodeling cleaned up this small kitchen and helped it function more efficiently. Before, though the sink and most appliances seemed to be in the right places, there wasnt quite enough counter space. And heavy-looking painted wood cabinets and a crowded breakfast area made the entire kitchen seem cramped. For more comfortable seating, a built-in bench now wraps a corner of the eating area. The windows were restyled, with a new one added to the kitchens long wall; the breakfast areas section of this wall was pushed out about 1 1/2 feet.
Out for views, up for light: those are the directions this tall, four-sided bay takes to gain garden views. Since the shallow pitch of the existing roof would have cramped the high, open greenhouse look the Starrs wanted, designer Linda Thornton of Carmel, California, gave the bay an octagonal roof of its own. It rises almost 3 feet above the existing roof, radiating from a central point above the eave line. Half of it notches into the old roof; the other half extends beyond to top the four glass walls. Only three support posts obstruct garden views through the glass panes. Outside, a planter wraps around the base of the bay, softening the expanse of concrete patio.

There are around 3,000 “life coaches” in America, and numbers are rising. Even so, coaches in the States are still waiting for the day when people stop saying, “What is life-coaching?” and ask, “Who is your coach?” A coach is a hybrid of business advisor, mentor, therapist, counsellor - and grandma, who thinks youre perfect and wants you to be happy. Ive worked with counsellors for years, writing about their work. I admire it enormously, but whats exciting about coaching is the directness. A counsellor could have your problems and solutions taped in minutes, but months can pass as you are gentled through the process of discovering it for yourself. Coaches instead are straight-talking (but always positive), and will say what strikes them as the truth from the first session. Coaching is achievement- focused. It feels adult, and fast - you are encouraged to take action from day one to become more profitable, healthier, deal with unfinished emotional business, have more fun, make better relationships, or whatever is holding you back. Coaches are trained to handle anything but they tend to specialise in certain professions or life situations. It can be surprising. With my coach, Madeleine Homan, who specialises in creative types, I addressed my procrastination and writing blocks in our first talk. She didnt advise me about how to work harder, but asked me to take more time off - making one working day a week my “creative day” when I do whatever appeals. I tried out this and other suggestions, and just seven weeks later I work with more pleasure, less angst and increased effectiveness. I feel healthier, more energetic and more relaxed. Madeleine is in New York (not so crazy, as a half-hour call costs under pounds 4), but there are coaches in Britain (most working for corporates), 50 training with Coach University, the American “virtual” course, carried out through teleconferencing and e-mail. Some come from caring professions, but felt it made sense to look at practical and financial issues as well as the emotional. Some began as business consultants but couldnt ignore personal issues. They have been coaching for years, usually face-to-face, but some are starting to offer a telephone service. Sherrie Charlton is a UK coach. Vaughn Khelifa, who works in the pharmaceutical industry, was coached by her for 18 months.” I thought it would be like training - being lectured to by an expert. Instead Sherrie helped me think differently: what am I looking for from this; is this the best approach for that person? At the end, I ask myself if I handled it the best way, or how I could improve on it. It has given me confidence and skills that have helped me progress in my job and develop even better relationships with my husband and daughter.” Sherrie believes you have to look to your own development when helping others develop, and spends a quarter of her work hours on this. She is doing a Masters in personal and organisational development as well as a Coach University course. The training is fascinating in itself (Ive signed up). It is commonsense, with a spiritual slant, underpinned by a philosophy of personal excellence. Vocabulary can be puzzling (or a source of joy). One student supplied a word to a trainer who thanked her for “up-languaging me”; Madeleine thought I was confessing to promiscuity when I said I was a “slut”, though I was only admitting to cobwebs and clutter. But the concepts are universal and living with integrity one that is key. Bob Griffiths, a coach for 12 years, can make referrals, and represents Coach University in Britain: 0171 787 8599; coach@willow.demon. co.uk. Sherrie Charlton: 0181 868 0085. NASHVILLE — After two years of cleansing, a more streamlined GuestHouse International is poised to move forward. When ShoLodge acquired the 72-property GuestHouse chain in 2002, there were about the same number of Shoneys Inns. Now there are 70 GuestHouses and eight Shoneys Inns. At the same time, we had a corporate dictum that we were going to get out of the real-estate-owned business, he said. We owned about 30 of those 70 Shoneys. So with the combination of consciously streamlining and cleaning the dead wood out of the GuestHouse chain and selling our own Shoneys properties that we tried to keep in the system, we knew we were going to take that 140 down significantly.

Over the years the concept of medical necessity has evolved to encompass a multitude of medical management strategies. Essentially, in terms of the contract language, medical necessity has become a workhorse concept to determine coverage eligibility. In the process, the interpretation of the term has taken on various guises and a variety of processes have been used to define medical necessity. The following discussion highlights the variable uses of the concept of medical necessity. 1. Determining the most appropriate intensity of service and place of service
Health Alliance Medical Plans last month announced its coverage of two over-the-counter drugs formerly available by prescription only: Wyeths Alavert and Procter Gambles Prilosec OTC. Health Alliance will require members who have prescription drug benefits to obtain a written prescription from their physicians for the new over-the-counter drugs in order to receive coverage. The news at Health Alliance follows Medco Health Solutions expansion of its Generics First program in June to include Wyeths analgesic Advil and allergy remedy Alavert.
Editors note: This article is adapted from Menke and Bobbins Integrative Chiropractic, scheduled for release in 2007 by Elsevier Health Sciences. “The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care, but it also trains the patient-to-be to function in the meantime as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a lifelong patient.” “Medicalizing” is forcing conditions into familiar diagnostic categories for medical management.1 Every complaint has an antidote, whether it needs one or not. ; Treating natural consequences of living as diseases that must be vanquished, leads to too much treatment and too much dependence on the authoritative “professional.” We tend to grant most, if not all of our decision-making authority to an expert in highly complex technologies. In the case of medicine, this often complicates the commonplace condition and prolongs selflimiting ones. Today, diseases and drugs are way oversold.

It is almost worthwhile getting “whiplash” preprinted on a claim form to save time Turning first to the real increase, the recently published report by the governments Statistical Service on Road Accidents in Great Britain in 1996 provides a clue. Injuries in 1996 totalled 317,000, which was an increase on the 307,000 in 1995. Fatalities, however, fell slightly to 3,598 from 3,621. Both figures had been generally falling since the mid 60s, when they peaked at just under 8,000 fatalities and just under 400,000 injuries. This has doubtless arisen for a whole number of reasons, including compulsory seat belts and crash helmets, drink drive regulations, air bags, better car design, and many others. To achieve this reduction over that period was particularly remarkable, because the vehicle population in the mid 60s was 13 million compared with slightly over 26 million now. Most of this increase in vehicle population can be found on the M25 each morning and evening!
Growth in exposure prompts change in coverage provision Are your homeowners clients concerned about their exposure to personal injury claims? They should be, especially if they have adolescent children. In the Internet age, however, the potential for personal injury claims has increased substantially. Thanks to the global reach of e-mail, blogs, and shared sites such as MySpace and YouTube, damaging comments can be instantly transmitted to millions of people throughout the world and live on, so to speak, in electronic files that may never be fully expunged.

Say the words gadgets for women to most men and rather quickly schoolboy humour takes over. But during the last year we have witnessed a huge change in British female purchasing habits: women now spend three times more on gadgets than on cosmetics; there are more female gamers than men and, flying in the face of conventional marketing wisdom, 91 per cent of women say the colour of the gadget is utterly unimportant — which means that just producing a pink version of a product isnt going to work any more. No woman would dream of bringing her pink laptop into a meeting. Its about sleek and sophisticated design like the BlackBerry Pearl. Women are tired of products that pink up and dumb down. The photography collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is a nationally recognized assemblage of over 20,000 photographs by approximately 3000 artists that encompasses dozens of major collections.
Anne Wilkes Tucker, Dana Friis-Hansen, Kaneko Ryuichi, and Takeba Joe. The History of Japanese Photography. New Haven: Yale University Press in association with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 2003. Includes essays by Iizawa Kotaro and Kinoshita Naoyuki. 432 pp., 356 color ills., 50 b/w. $65. In her introductory essay, Anne Wilkes Tucker, Curator of Photography at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, provides a historical context for the catalogue through a survey of Western publications on and exhibitions of Japanese photography. As Tucker points out, the history of Japanese photography has had a relatively short existence as a field of study in its own right, even within Japan. It was not until well after World War II that the discipline garnered much serious interest and not until the 1980s that widespread institutional support allowed for significant advances in research. Since the 1970s, the work of Japanese photographers has been featured in a number of exhibitions and books in both Japan and the West. However, much of the focus has been on post-World War II photography. The most comprehensive English-language publication to date was A Century of Japanese Photography, 1840-1945, a translation of a 1971 Japan Photographers Professional Society volume, published in 1980 with an introductory essay by John W. Dower. It is worth noting that even within Japan an exhibition covering the scope of the Houston show has never been organized. Tucker articulates the need for a nation-based survey of Japan, an issue sure to be a main point of contention among critics of this text. Asserting that most Japanese photography recognized in the West has been assimilated into an international frame of reference that pays little attention to the national traditions and contemporary context from which it arose (2). Tucker argues that such interpretations limit understanding and needlessly [diminish] the levels on which the work may be approached (13). The catalogue presents a standard chronological survey in six essays by five noted scholars. Kinoshita Naoyuki, Professor of Cultural Studies at Tokyo University, examines the second half of the nineteenth century in The Early Years of Japanese Photography. Portraits and landscape comprised the earliest genres, along with the scenic views and contrived images of Japanese customs made for Western audiences, while later uses included documenting frontier expansion and collections of national treasures. Kinoshita highlights some uniquely Japanese uses of photography as well. These included the promotion of the study of photography by Japanese authorities during the 1850s and 1860s as one of many branches of Western technology to be mastered in order to modernize the country (22-23), and photographic portraits as replacements for miei, traditional painted portraits of the deceased (27).

Pauls American flag Just days after the events of Sept. 11, 2001, Paul Shoemakers family traveled to New York City, heeding the appeal of then-Mayor Rudolph Giuliani to help revitalize the city. In the car, the jumbled images and emotions of that time coalesced into a plan when the 16-year-old saw a full-page U.S. flag in USA Today. Paul put five stars in the upper left corner to represent the Pentagon as well as the five-star general, George C. Marshall, for whom his McLean, Va., high school is named. Other images include minarets and the pyramids of Gaza. Pauls favorite is a picture of Anne Frank. “I chose her because in her diaries she says no matter how evil people can come across, there can still be good in people,” he says.

As this issue goes to press, the railroad industry will have had almost six months to digest the impact of the ICCs car-hire deprescription rules. Assuming you start counting from the date these rules were first promulgated in 1993, railroads have had sufficient time to react, and we should be seeing the first faint stirrings of how things will be in the future. Our industry sources tell us that while there have been some dramatic overtures by some of the railroads that were deprescriptions greatest proponents, there is a lot that hasnt yet occurred but which will likely shake out in the near future. Like the weekend partygoer who overdid it on Sunday evening and has to face Monday morning eventually, the railroad industry has come to grips with the reality of car-hire deprescription. The attitude seems to be, “Its here and even though we did (or did not) support it, we now have to get on with business in a new environment.” And getting on with business has been what most railroads have been actively involved with since the first of the year. For instance, as of this writing, about 47,000 railcars have been deprescribed and converted into market rate cars by their owners. Generally speaking, these cars have either been voluntarily deprescribed ones that, due to their age, would otherwise have continued to earn a low stated per diem under the old rules (in the face of a shortage of the car type that would allow a higher market rate - about 21,000 cars total), or they have been cars that have been rebuilt and have become market rate cars as a result.
ASCRATCH on the paintwork of your hire car this summer could cost you as much as pounds 1,000 if you havent read the small print. Thats because the insurance you buy as part of your package covers you for very little when you drive abroad. And most hire firms dont flag this up when you book. Its only when you collect your car that you could find an additional charge that can cost up to pounds 140 for a fortnight. Its called the Super CDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver) which covers your insurance excess if you have an accident.
Finding a safe hired car abroad can have “worse odds than Russian roulette”, Britons preparing for their summer holidays were warned yesterday. They could find themselves driving away with a vehicle with dodgy tyres, sloppy servicing, faulty headlights or missing indicators, according to a survey carried out for Holiday Which? magazine Of 57 cars inspected in Corfu and Spain last autumn, 17 were condemned as dangerous. The inspectors estimated that the chances of hiring a car that a customer would be happy with were less than 50-50.

LAWRENCE — Like a welcome house guest, Texas Tech coach Bob Knight was on his best behavior. The capacity crowd of 16,300 in Allen Fieldhouse jeered Knight before Saturdays game against Kansas, many waving signs that read “Red Rager,” and again on the several occasions when the coach argued with officials. But for the most part, Jayhawk fans didnt try to bait the volatile coach. Knight, in fact, remained gracious despite his Red Raiders losing 96-77. As he walked toward the locker room after the game, he quietly thanked the dozens of fans who clapped and offered encouraging words.
I was recently at a spectacular home in Nassau, in the Bahamas. While the host was showing us around, I observed that every guest room — there were five of them — had a kitchenette fitted with a small refrigerator, a coffee machine and a pantry sink. I have noticed that this has become an increasingly common fixture in many of my friends homes. Guests are often encouraged to prepare their own coffee, and at times even their own breakfasts, far removed from the hosts or other visitors. Whenever I entertain weekend company, and I do so quite regularly, I enjoy a morning cappuccino at the large kitchen table with the early risers. Some come down fully dressed while others wander around in bathrobes and slippers.

The principles of beautiful web design.
From action-oriented content to more efficient workflows, six pros tell how the Internet is moving design forward–both online and off Getting stock photography or illustration for last-minute editorial changes used to be a mad scramble, and logistics often ruled out getting exactly what I wanted. But with all the major stock houses online now–some with very sophisticated search engines and well-designed user interfaces–finding the stock art I need is actually enjoyable. Factor in being able to download files for immediate use or, at the least, pulling in the screen shot for FPO (eliminating the need to scan all those tiny stock book pictures), and the process couldnt be better. My favorite sites are Corbis and Newsmakers. From a production standpoint, the Internet has given me a tool for doing much better work under the same crazy deadlines. From a design standpoint, its had little effect on me. Idealistically, theres little reason it should. The Net is a very different visual medium than print, because it can incorporate sound, animation and video. But has there been an effect on design? In several ways, the answer is yes–and all are negative. Because of the explosion of Web content, design talent has been spread thin. Often, too, designers are burdened with living in both worlds–print and Web design–which presents very difficult technical problems. Just as the integration of the computer into magazine design workfiow suddenly made designers accountable as production managers and technicians, so has the Internet forced many designers to try to become bilingual. Its hard enough maintaining fluency in Quark, Illustrator and Photoshop. Adding Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Flash sustains the designers evolution from aesthete to technician.

Since its inception in 1984, The International Wine Challenge has become the biggest and the most celebrated wine event in the world. With more than 10,000 entries, produced in countries ranging from France and Australia to Thailand and Uruguay, it takes a wine of considerable character to impress the panel of expert judges. As well a host of individual awards, which do seem to be reaching saturation point, the ultimate achievement, however does still lie with the Great Value Wine of the Year category. Brown Brothers Non Vintage Pinot Chardonnay This is a fine sparkling wine made in the traditional method from grapes grown in the cool King Valley. A full, ripe melon nose with hints of pineapple and toasty overtones. Delicate, lively mousse and a good length.
Good news on the face of it for the bargain basement crowd, but low prices and small volumes do justice neither to the quality nor the availability of whats produced by this South American giant. As the New Worlds biggest domestic consumer, its own population has in the past mopped up its wines like a sponge. Today, rapidly declining consumption and a weak peso have forced Argentina to look to consumers overseas. But its tough to get its voice heard, which why you wont find a single Argentinian brand in a top 20 dominated by Australia and California. With no UK office to promote its wares, it has also suffered next to the hugely effective efforts of Australia, South Africa, Chile, New Zealand and California. So why am I optimistic about Argentina? For a start, it is belatedly due to set up its own office here in the autumn. But theres more to it than that. It took Chile until the mid-1990s to re-orient its vineyards and cellars away from plonk, and the message is finally getting through to Argentina. It has the resources, the sunshine, the unique soils of the high Andes and an unpolluted environment in which to produce a wide variety of styles. Yes, malbec is Argentinas USP but torronts, tempranillo, bonarda and tannat also have great potential. As do the more usual suspects: cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay and viognier.

The demand for more education and real people to share their experiences with plastic surgery has grown incredibly all over the world, explained Dr. Mayer, co-director with Richard Fleming, M.D. of the Beverly Hills Institute of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery. We are excited to participate in a show like Cosmetic Surgery Live, which takes the epicenter of beauty (LA) to the United Kingdom. Dr. Mayer will perform a new FDA-approved procedure called the ENDOTINE Cheek Lift which is ideal for patients ages 35-50 who are not looking for a radical makeover, but a more understated rejuvenation that brings them back 7-10 years. With its five points of contact and absorbable features, the new ENDOTINE device gives patients natural, long-lasting results. It also enhances cheek volume - key to obtaining a more youthful appearance. During a cheeklift procedure using ENDOTINE, a half-inch incision is made inside a crows foot alongside the lower eye. Once the underlying muscle and tissue has been elevated to lift the cheek area, the new ENDOTINE Mid Face is placed to capture and elevate the cheek, securing it into the bone and holding it in position until the soft tissue re-adheres to the cheek bone entirely. The ENDOTINE gradually absorbs completely, at which time the tissue is securely attached to the cheekbone lifting the mid-face.

Skin patients needing less-specialised treatment would be dealt with at a new unit at Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley while child patients would be treated at Birmingham Childrens Hospital.

Maximizing the productivity of Kmarts core assets is a critical component to Chuck Conaways master plan to take the company to new levels of performance. And nowhere does Kmart stand to benefit more from its assets than in apparel, where both the executives and the brands are among the best things going for the chain. In January, Nagler was named senior vp and gmm in a realignment that eliminated a level of management in the apparel sector. Naglers elevation to the top apparel post was consistent with other changes within Kmarts executive suite that have emphasized the establishment of clearer spheres of accountability and a simpler delineation of responsibility. Nagler, who was once responsible solely for childrens wear, oversaw the successful development of Sesame Street in this segment, and later the expansion of the Route 66 brand in mens. Additionally, she supervised the expansion of the big mens program at Kmart, a program slated for greater emphasis going forward. Also, since she had past experience in womens–including stints at Federated Department Stores and The Limited–she was an eminently reasonable choice to head up Kmarts overall apparel operation.

The May issue contained an informative article titled Fork on the Road (Product Monitor, page 89). While reading the article, I noticed that Sellick Equipment did not receive mention as a truck-mounted forklift manufacturer. I am sure this was an unintentional overnight as Sellick not only advertises in PROSALES but has manufactured truck-mounted forklifts since 1995. The article did a good job in pointing out the benefits the lumber industry gains by using truck-mounted forklifts. This will lead to increased demand that will benefit all manufacturers of truck-mounted forklifts. Harrow, Ontario, Canada

Despite its recent dramatic downturn, telecommunications is poised for a revolutionary resurgence, thanks to four technologies that will make it more personal and decentralized. The winners will be you and those companies that dont cling to the past. Four concurrent, very different but strong trends will combine to force a shift as big as Bells invention in the first place. Unlicensed spectrum, ad hoc networks, things that link, and asynchronous communications will turn telecommunications upside down. It is too easy to dismiss the current and dramatic downturn in the industry as a combination of overbuilding, flattened growth, license fees, badly managed debt, and inflated valuations. These reasons are so plentiful that it is natural to assume the underlying industry and technology would be stable, if only we could manage it right. That is not true. In parallel with these tumultuous socioeconomic times, there are less evident but deeper technological changes ahead.
TELECOMMUNICATIONSCommunication began as early as the existence of humankind. The evolution of communication systems has included primitive sign language, pounding drums, smoke signals, fire signals, the telegraph, the telephone, wireless communication, and satellite communication. To succeed in this world, communication has become a vital tool in everyday living. With telecommunications systems, individuals access information, bank, and shop online; and professionals are linked together by very complex computer networks. Communications technology has reshaped the world. Radio, television, computers, the Internet, and wireless networks have made it easier and more affordable to stay in touch. Communication has become a way of life. Communications technology has revolutionized the way people stay connected.Telecommunication messages are transmitted in a variety of ways. Messages are sent from one sender to a single receiver (point-to-point) or from one sender to many receivers (point-to-multipoint). Point-to-point transmission includes personal communications such as a telephone conversation or a facsimile (fax).

Much of the material stems from practical problems encountered by Neville in consulting work or in litigation. For copies, contact the American Concrete Institute on +1 248 848 3800, e-mail: bkstore@concrete.org.
ConcreteConcrete is a hardened building material created by combining a chemically inert mineral aggregate (usually sand, gravel, or crushed stone), a binder (natural or synthetic cement), chemical additives, and water. Although people commonly use the word cement as a synonym for concrete, the terms in fact denote different substances: cement, which encompasses a wide variety of fine-ground powders that harden when mixed with water, represents only one of several components in modern concrete. As concrete dries, it acquires a stone-like consistency that renders it ideal for constructing roads, bridges, water supply and sewage systems, factories, airports, railroads, waterways, mass transit systems, and other structures that comprise a substantial portion of the U.S. wealth. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), building such facilities is in itself one of the nations largest industries and represents about 10 percent of the gross national product. Over $4 billion worth of hydraulic cement, a variety which hardens under water, is produced annually in the United States for use in $20 billion worth of concrete construction. The value of all cement-based structures in the United States is in the trillions of dollarsroughly commensurate with the anticipated cost of repairing those structures over the next twenty years. The words cement and concrete are both of Latin origin, reflecting the likelihood that the ancient Romans were the first to use the substances. Many examples of Roman concrete construction remain in the countries that encircle the Mediterranean, where Roman builders had access to numerous natural cement deposits. Natural cement consists mainly of lime, derived from limestone and often combined with volcanic ash. It formed the basis of most civil engineering until the eighteenth century, when the first synthetic cements were developed.
Run by The Concrete Centre in collaboration with The Building Centre Trust and delivered by leading designers, innovators and manufacturers, the Concrete Elegance lecture series provides graduate architects and engineers with an inspirational insight into a range of projects where off-site and cast in-place concrete have been used to achieve innovative and elegant design. The 2007 Concrete Elegance series continued to cover a range of issues and projects. The first lecture examined developments in sustainable concrete architecture. In particular, it focused on the reduction of both embodied and operational CO2, how to create carbon-neutral concrete and the design of single-skin self-finished external concrete walls. Lecture speakers included: Toby Lewis of Fielden Clegg Bradley Architects, who discussed the National Trust Heelis building in Swindon and the Persistence Works in Sheffield; Patrick Filipaj of Zurich-based Banz Choffat Filipaj Architekten, who examined the single-skin concrete construction of Peter Gartmanns Char House; and Ian Prichett of Lime Technology, who presented the use of hempcrete for Adnams Distribution Centre designed by architect Aukett Fitzroy Robinson.

Preliminary duties placed on imports of Chinese wood bedroom furniture by the U.S. Department of Commerce may have more of an immediate impact on the lobbying efforts of the Furniture Retailers of America than on buyer behavior. The DOC imposed punitive tariffs on Chinese wood bedroom furniture effective July 17. According to the DOC, the tariffs affect approximately $1.2 billion of wood bedroom furniture that is manufactured in China for sale to the United States each year. Seven Chinese producers, representing approximately 40 percent of all shipments of U.S. Chinese wood bedroom furniture imports, will face duties that range from 4.9% percent to 24.34%. (See box.)
Chains Expand RTA Furniture Skus; Add Bedroom Sets New lines of bedroom furniture aimed at te discount market and the continued growing acceptance of ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture among consumers has created a category that buyers say all but sells itself. Even more important to discount store buyers, the RTA consumer is evidently willing to trade up to higher prices as long as the product exhibits upgraded style and quality.
